Founded in 1971, Zhejiang Research Institute of Stage Design is the earliest established research unit on stage technique with most powerful comprehensive strength in China. It is engaged in researching, developing, designing and manufacturing complete cultural and recreational sets of equipment, engineering, installing, test-running complete technical projects of lighting, acoustics, stage machinery, projection, movie and air-conditioning.

Affiliated to Chinese Cultural Ministry, the institute has formulated or drafted the following national standards and professional standards: "Parameters of Electronic Lighting Control Equipment Characteristics and Methods of Measurement", "Limits and Methods of Measurement of Radio Disturbance Characteristics of Electronic Lighting Control Equipment", "Terminology in Common Use of Light Controlling Equipment", "The Specification of the Collocation of Theatrical Equipment" etc.
The institute has prepared and drafted the chapter of stage technology for "The Eighth Five-Year Plan" and "The Ninth Five-Year Plan" made by the Cultural Ministry It published a quarterly "Art Science and Technology"--- the sole magazine covering the subject of art science and technology in China. The famous scientist and professor Qian Xuesen showed great concern for the magazine and the institute. Doctor Li Zhengdao wrote inscription for the magazine:" Art science and technology, fly side by side."
The institute includes Electric Institute、 Mechanism Institute、 Engineering Design Institute, and boasts more than 150 workers and staff members including 90 technicians.
With the goal of carrying out the modernization of stage technology, the institute has attained great achievements of scientific significance, which reached or close to international advanced level. It has gained over 50 items of state, ministry and province-level scientific development awards. Furthermore, seven equipments has been selected and rated as state-level new products by National Science Committee and China State Bureau of Technical Supervision. It manufactured thousands of complete large-scale sets of stage equipment successfully applied in different fields. It fulfilled hundreds of projects of theatres, song and dance halls, TV stations and gymnasiums. Such as small Hall of the People's Grand Conference Hall, Beijing Tianqiao Theatr , Hangzhou Theatre, Hangzhou Grand Theatre , Shenzhen Concert Hall, Wuhan Grand Theatre , concert hall in National Grand Theater of China , etc. The products spread over 30 provinces and Hong Kong SAR . The institute exported stage equipment more than any other unit of its kind in China. Over ten experts went abroad for designing, installation, test-running and training.
The institute has established cooperation with many oversea famous stage Corporation. It joined the Art-Net protocol alliance and obtained the OEM code. It has overpassed ISO9001 quality system authentication and has possessed architectural intelligentize first level etc multi- qualification. In 2005 , the intitute obtained three first-level in mechanism, lighting, acoustics in China interpretation and art device technical association’s level assessing. It is the only enterprise which obtains all three first-level in our country.
Zhejiang Research Institute of Stage Design will establish a center of scientific research, design, manufacturing, business, engineering and training, an all-round developing center of lighting, machinery, electricity, air-conditioning, films and TV equipment. It will spare no effort to develop Chinese stage technology and make contribution to the flourishing of the cultural undertakings.
